Have you ever noticed the midsole of your outdoor shoes determines how they feel, how long they last, and how well they support you? Here's a quick breakdown of the three main materials:
1.EVA
Lightest and softest. Feels plush right out of the box — great for lightweight hiking and trail running. But it compresses over time and loses its bounce after a few hundred miles. Best for short, light trips where you want a cushy ride.
2.PU
Heavier than EVA but much more durable. PU doesn't pack down easily, holds up well in cold weather, and keeps its shape for years. Downside: it's pricier, and if left unused for too long, it can hydrolyze and crumble. Best for heavy loads, multiday treks, and hikers who need longterm support.
3.TPU
Firm, tough, and quick to rebound. TPU resists tearing and oil better than the others, but it's also the heaviest and feels stiff underfoot. Often used in highstress areas or combined with EVA. Best for technical terrain or highintensity activities where protection matters most.
So which one should you pick?
Go EVA for light and cushy. Go PU for heavy and durable. Go TPU for hardcore protection. Not sure? Look for hybrids — like an EVA midsole with TPU inserts — to get the best of both worlds.
